Monroe County Parks and Beaches Department under investigation

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says it is investigating the county’s parks and beaches department following a recent audit.

According to a letter sent to the Board of County Commissioners, the county audit was a follow up to a 2022 memo. The memo recommended improvements to the way admissions fees are collected at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier.

While the Parks and Beaches director implemented many of those recommendations, the audit identified “deficiencies” in the way the department handles cash for its school break camp program and county property rentals.

The auditors say they couldn’t confirm whether all camp attendees paid required fees or that fees were properly deposited into the county’s bank account.

Auditors also allege the department has not been applying state sales taxes for county property rentals, as well as waiving fees without proper approval.

They also found that invoices for rentals don’t include key information like dates and payment terms.

The sheriff’s investigation is ongoing.
