Kindergartners are missing a lot of school. This district has a fix

In rural Livingston, Calif., where people are vastly outnumbered by sweet potatoes, something remarkable is happening in the public schools.

When kindergarten teacher Lupe Fuentes tells her class they have perfect attendance for the day, the roomful of children cheer, 鈥淗ip, hip hooray, everybody鈥檚 here today!鈥

Nearby, gathered on the learning rug in teacher Diana Dickey鈥檚 classroom, the kindergartners aren鈥檛 cheering: They鈥檝e just been told one of their classmates is absent. Sick, perhaps 鈥 though Dickey isn鈥檛 sure yet. A few children seem concerned.

Dickey reminds them to keep the absent boy in their hearts. On the whiteboard, she has drawn a large, dry-erase heart. Above it is a gallery of small, magnetized photos 鈥 one for every child in the class. Dickey and the class then move the absent boy鈥檚 photo inside the heart.

鈥淏oom, boom, pow,鈥 they sing together, to the absent boy. 鈥淲e miss you, and we wish you well.鈥

These attendance ceremonies may seem small, but they send a powerful message to every child in class: In Livingston, when you miss school, you鈥檙e not just absent 鈥 you鈥檙e missed.

In many K-12 schools across the country, an alarming number of children have been chronically absent 鈥 an old problem that COVID-19 made much, much worse. To be considered chronically absent, a student must miss at least 10% of the school year, usually around 18 school days. According to , more than 1 in 4 students across the U.S. was chronically absent during the 2022-23 school year.

One of the hardest-hit grades might surprise you: kindergarten.

In California, for example, more than 1 in 3 kindergartners was chronically absent. But the tiny town of Livingston, in California鈥檚 sprawling Central Valley, is an outlier 鈥 and a powerful lesson in the ways a district can proactively prevent wide-scale absenteeism.

鈥淲e were just wowed by what we saw the moment we set foot on Livingston鈥檚 campuses,鈥 says Sujie Shin with the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence.

Shin reviewed attendance data for all of California鈥檚 roughly 1,000 school districts, searching for solutions to the absenteeism crisis. She noticed Livingston鈥檚 kindergarten absenteeism rate was much lower 鈥 nearly 10 percentage points lower 鈥 than the state average. She wondered what they were doing that was so right?

The short answer is: a lot. Here are three things.

1. Teaching young parents that kindergarten attendance matters

During the pandemic, many parents didn鈥檛 send their children to preschool or day care, which means they weren鈥檛 forming consistent attendance habits until kindergarten.

鈥淔or many families, especially post-pandemic, this is the first time you鈥檙e actually sharing the responsibility of nurturing and raising your child with another human being,鈥 says Hedy Chang, who founded the nonprofit initiative Attendance Works. She鈥檚 considered one of the smartest people in the country when it comes to understanding chronic absenteeism.

Chang says some kindergarten families simply don鈥檛 understand how important it is to be consistent.

鈥淎ttendance is a lot about laying down the line and saying, 鈥楬ey, we鈥檙e gonna get my kid to school every day. And I鈥檓 gonna partner with my teacher so this is both engaging and we have the supports we need,鈥欌 Chang says. 鈥淲hen we have that experience in kindergarten, we lay the foundation for our future.鈥

The opposite is also true. Chang warns that poor attendance can have a long-term impact. 鈥淐hronic absence in kindergarten is associated with not being as likely to read or count proficiently in third grade.

Mayte Ram铆rez, a principal at one of Livingston鈥檚 elementary schools, will often pick up the phone and call the families of absent kindergartners with a warning: Missing one day of kindergarten is like missing three.

鈥淭he day that they were absent,鈥 Ram铆rez says, 鈥渢hat鈥檚 a whole day.鈥 The second day, they may come back, but they鈥檙e so busy catching up, they miss new material. 鈥淥n the third day, they鈥檙e still trying to catch up! So they鈥檙e missing three days of instruction. And for littles, that鈥檚 huge.鈥

One Livingston mom, Yolanda, says she learned this lesson the hard way. We agreed to only use Yolanda鈥檚 first name because it can be hard to talk about absenteeism. She says that two years ago, when her daughter was in kindergarten, Yolanda let her miss a lot of school. Her daughter wasn鈥檛 necessarily sick; there were times she simply didn鈥檛 want to go. By the time her daughter got to first grade, she struggled with reading and writing.

鈥淚 realized I shouldn鈥檛 have [let her miss class],鈥 Yolanda says. 鈥淣ow that I have my 5-year-old [son] in kindergarten, I do not let him miss school. He鈥檚 only missed one day. So that he doesn鈥檛 struggle like his sister.鈥

2. Helping parents make sense of pandemic health rules

During COVID, families were often told: If your child seems sick, keep them home.

Now though, absenteeism has become an epidemic, and schools are telling families: Unless your child is really sick (fever, vomiting or diarrhea), they should be in class. It鈥檚 a big change, says Rafael Bautista, the father of another Livingston kindergartner.

When one of his kids gets the sniffles, he wonders, 鈥淪hould I send them to school like that? Or should I just make sure he is fine? You know? And also, I mean, allergies 鈥 you don鈥檛 know! Our kids get sick very often.鈥

Livingston has a fix for all this confusion. Her name is Lori Morgan, and she鈥檚 the district鈥檚 top nurse. She gives families her personal cell number and tells them, if in doubt, call her.

鈥淚 was on vacation [recently],鈥 Morgan says with a smile. 鈥淚 was on the phone and on email with a dozen parents. Yeah, I鈥檓 never really off.鈥

In Livingston, Nurse Lori, as she's known, tells families they don鈥檛 have to decide if their child is too sick for school. Just meet her or a member of her health staff in the school parking lot.

鈥淵ou don鈥檛 even have to get out of the car. Just stay in the car,鈥 Morgan tells families. 鈥淲e鈥檒l come out and check your child out.鈥

She may take their temperature, ask a few questions. If a child is truly sick, Morgan says, she helps families get a quick doctor鈥檚 appointment at the local health clinic. But, she laughs, 鈥99% of the time they鈥檙e well enough to stay.鈥 And so she walks them to class.

In Livingston schools, building relationships with families isn鈥檛 a side project. It鈥檚 fundamental. And it isn鈥檛 just Morgan. Each school site employs a dedicated parent liaison. And at morning drop-off, kindergarten parents are allowed to enter the closed campus and walk their children to a waiting teacher.

鈥淥ur families have a close connection to our schools,鈥 says Superintendent Andres Zamora, who is wrapping up his 15th year in Livingston.

3. Making school a place children want to be

Helping parents see the value of kindergarten and understand post-pandemic health rules can boost attendance, sure. But the most important thing schools can do is make sure kids want to be there.

She is excited for school every morning,鈥 says Erika Zurita, whose daughter is in kindergarten in Livingston. 鈥淭his spring break, she kept asking me, 鈥楢re we going to school tomorrow? I miss my teacher, my school, my classmates.鈥 She loves it.鈥

How in the world do you do that? Sujie Shin, with the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence, says the research is clear: One of the best predictors of a child鈥檚 success in school is how they answer one, simple question.

鈥淚s there an adult at school that cares about you? Yes or no? That鈥檚 it,鈥 Shin says. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 the question that can tell you everything.鈥

And in Livingston, Shin says, it鈥檚 clear that teachers and school leaders share 鈥渢his real intense focus on creating and maintaining relationships every single moment possible.鈥

At her school, Principal Mayte Ram铆rez waits outside during morning drop-off, the first face many kids see as they emerge from the bus or idling cars. She flits easily between English and Spanish, which puts many families at ease as more than 80% of the district鈥檚 children are Hispanic. It鈥檚 not uncommon to hear Ram铆rez call a child 鈥渕y heart鈥 or 鈥渕i coraz贸n.鈥

When an SUV pulls up a few minutes late, Ram铆rez finds a little boy in the back seat, folded into a ball of anxiety. He does not want to go to school, and his mother isn鈥檛 sure what to do. But Principal Ram铆rez knows him 鈥 and the boy knows her. She opens the rear door, leans all the way in and gently extends her hand to the little boy.

鈥淐ome and help me, my love,鈥 Ram铆rez says.

The little boy unfolds himself, takes his principal鈥檚 hand and steps out of the car. Ram铆rez repays his trust by walking him through the front gates and all the way to his classroom.

On the way, she assures him, 鈥淵ou鈥檙e gonna have a great day.鈥
